Synthetic Perfumes & Why You Shouldn't Ever Include Them in Your Intimate Care Routine!

We all want to smell good, right? Most of the fragranced skincare products on the market today are scented with synthetic perfumes for that exact reason. But more and more studies are stating the risks of being exposed to these chemicals. Let's break down what these risks are and why it's smart to pay attention to what you actually apply onto your skin.

We have listed some of the chemicals that synthetic perfumes often include and what damages these can do to your health. And don’t get scared of the complicated names – we will explain them to you in an easy way!

Phthalates: These are chemicals often used in fragrances to make them stick around longer on your body. But what is important to know is that phthalates have been linked to hormone disruptions and even the cause of reproductive health problems.

Parabens: You'll often find these in perfumes as preservatives. However, parabens have been associated with hormone disruption too and have even been detected in breast cancer tissue. On top of that, parabens have been shown to cause skin irritation and allergic reactions including symtoms like redness, itching and swelling. They also have an environmentally negative impact since they are persistent in the environment and have been detected in waterways, soil and wildlife.

Synthetic Musks: While intended to provide a lasting aroma, some synthetic musks can accumulate in the environment and human tissues. Suspected to be hormone disruptors, these chemicals raise red flags regarding their impact on our health and nature's ecosystems.

Benzene Derivatives: Found in synthetic fragrances, benzene derivatives are known to trigger skin irritation and even respiratory issues if exposed to too much and too often. It's also known for being carcinogenic.

Formaldehyde: This chemical is used as a preservative and is also associated with skin irritation and allergic reactions.

Aldehydes: Provides certain scents in perfumes, but can be an irritant for skin and mucous membranes. Studies have also stated that it might be carcinogenic.

Per- and Polyflouroalkyl Substances (PFAS): Synthetic fragrances often contain PFAS which is well-known for increasing risks of cancer, negatively affect the body's immune system and hormonal balance, and has also been linked to decreased fertility and high blood pressure during pregnancy. PFAS are known as “the forever chemical”, since they do not break down in the body or environment over time…

Now, take a few seconds to reflect upon what you just read and the risks you might face when using synthetic perfumed products in your intimate area - one of your most sensitive body parts...

Not so tempting now, right?

Choosing fragrances that are free from these chemicals and going for natural options instead can help keep you smelling good without worrying about the above mentioned serious health risks.
